Art as a Business

Some say that Art and Business don't mix. How can something that is inspired, created from the palette of a creative soul be associated with a capitalistic business model where a product is made in order to be traded for money!

There have always been debates about beauty for beauty's sake vs the "dark side" of capitalism, but in reality business is about providing products for people who need and appreciate them and are prepared to pay for what they are worth.

In that context, there is a great need for beauty and expression to be provided to a world hungry to experience it - yet not all have been given the gift to create it in a visual art form. Thus, the "business" part kicks in - allowing a trade to occur between a creative individual and one who appreciates and needs the artistic product.

Do we condemn the business of "food", or the business of "medicine", or the business of "shelter", etc. Art is a necessity in our world and much as it would be great to share it freely - artists also have to eat.

Today's 2-cent observation!!

Well said, I am playing with my art at present not needing to sell work. But I totally agree with your thoughts on this matter. - John

Thank you all for your comments. It is the nature of art to be shared!

I quite agree with you. I wish that all would appreciate that art is as necessary to living as food and drink.
